![]() ![]() ![]() Evvie is the type of character that you want as a friend and I loved that she did everything in her power to make her friends feel comfortable. She doesn’t quite understand it’s purpose or how to control it, but when something from her past resurfaces she must learn all that she can. This book definitely has trigger warns for rape, attempted rape, use of racial slurs, and violence.ĭaughters of Jubilation is set in 1962 in South Carolina and follows 16 year old Evvie as she learns about her “jube,” a magic that has been passed down an endless line of Black women. It explores some very difficult, but very real topics that have affected Black women. It’s not your typical or traditional fantasy. I went into the book expecting a certain kind of magic and got something more powerful. Quite honestly I was surprised by Daughters of Jubilation. I mean I think this is the 4th time I’ve cried this year because of a book and it takes a lot to make me cry because of a book. 2020 publishing is determined to ruin me. ![]()

![]() I didn't have the slightest problem with the first two books, but this one seemed like there was too little information. ![]() I didn't get that.Īnd despite how much I loved the characters, I was having a hard time following the plot. ![]() Where murder is inevitable, I expected a little bit of cushion before the blow. There was so much connection and chemistry between them in the first two books and I was keeping my fingers crossed that they'd continue on with that at the beginning of this book to give something sweet to build on. These books went from some of my favorites of the year to "meh" and I'm a little disappointed.įirst, let me say, I adore Hunter and Cam. ![]() I was so excited to start this third book because of how well written the first two were, but Dancing Men kinda fell flat. This is technically the third book in the A Hunter Dane Investigation series, On His Knees and Matchstick Men being the first two, which I absolutely loved. Actual Review: 3.5 Stars (Aaaaannnnddd there's an unpopular opinion if I've ever seen one) ![]() ![]() I suffer from an aversion to speech tags, though, and there were a few times it got to be too much for me, but Walter made up for it. Walter takes one look at Frederick and thinks about well-oiled machinery LOL. Frederick, on the other hand, is rather sly and steals things to get back as the people who ruined his father’s company. Your Cover’s Blown has an inventor called Walter who forgets to eat and sleep once he’s working on something. Something about the steam and the mad scientists get me going LOL. You’d think there be a lot of titles starting with some for of You, and there are some, but not as many as you’d think. ![]() It’s surprisingly hard to find books starting with a Y. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is important to deconstruct one's opinions this way because a lot of things are learned about life on accident. But Dweck says failure is an essential aspect of success. For instance, in school, kids learn that failure is unacceptable and bad. This is humbling and confusing, and it means that people might not understand one's strategies in life. But few people attain true championship, so these role models might have to be surpassed on the way to one's own success. When people talk about role models, they tend to mention the people who they liked, who taught them something perhaps. By willingly adjusting one's opinions and perceptions, one can become flexible and fast-learning. The most primary of these is the titular Mindset. The book mentions school, sports, and corporate economy for this, and in all three places, the ideas share similarities that could be explored as ethical guidelines. In order to attain the kinds of success that motivated persons dream of, this book says they will have to change their opinions about the way things are.
